Motor Lifeboat (52ft.)
Self-righting and self-bailing; 52’0” LOA/49’9” LWL/49’0” LDWL, 14’6.5” molded beam at deck/13’2” beam DWL, 6’0” design draft/6’3” draft at full load; 31.4tons displacement at designed draft (32.6tons trial), 70,900lbs. operational displacement; twin 6-cylinder, 150HP/1800RPM GM 6-71 diesels (3:1 reduction gear), with twin 36” diameter/25” pitch 3-bladed propellers (currently 36”dia./30” pitch) in partial tunnel; single skeg-protected rudder with hydraulic power-assisted steering (later replaced in 1972 by enlarged twin rudders without guards, along with bilge keels shortened 4” at aft end, and the addition of a hydraulic power booster pump); 11kts. maximum (9.61kts. on trial); 1052gal. fuel, 276gal. fresh water; range 495nm at cruise speed (~12 hours)(reported as 2397nm. @ 60% power/1071nm. @ full power at ILB Conf.); two 10kW SSDGs; two engine belt-driven 250GPM/100PSIG fire pumps; two anchors; electric towing capstan and anchor windlass; stability range 165deg.; metacentric height 1.44’; maximum of 40 persons (5 crew + 35 survivors); full displacement welded steel hull (bottom 3/8” thick, ¼” thick on deck) with flush deck; galvanized longitudinals stiffened by transverse bulkheads and web frames; single low-profile WT deckhouse of aluminum; interior insulated with 3” fiberglass mats covered by rigidized aluminum sheathing; six WT bulkheads/seven WT compartments (forepeak, seating/berthing, seating/messing, galley/toilet/small arms locker, machinery room, stores, and lazarette); equipped with quick-acting WT doors and scuttles; all interior spaces heated and ventilated; bottom plating designed to withstand accidental grounding/beaching; interior and exterior steering stations; official CG District 13 environmental operating limits are 150nm. operational radius offshore, 70kts of wind, 35ft. seas/swells, and 25ft. breaking surf, although it is estimated that the boat can survive in up to 100kts. of wind; maximum towing capacity is 750 gross tons. All boats underwent a service life extension overhaul in 2000.
A total of four lifeboats of this type were built by the Coast Guard’s Curtis Bay Yard over the years 1953-55. CG52312 Victory is assigned to Station Yaquina Bay; CG52313 Invincible II is assigned to Station Grays Harbor; CG52314 Triumph II is assigned to Station Cape Disappointment; and CG52315 Intrepid is assigned to Station Coos Bay.
