Francis Metallic Type Pulling Surfboat

Neither self-bailing nor self-righting; 27ft. overall length, 6ft. 10in. maximum beam, 2ft. 6in. depth amidships; 6 thwarts for up to 10 oars rowed in double-banked configuration; no sailing rig; weight approximately 1500lbs. empty/4000lbs. with full outfit of equipment; double-ended hull of corrugated galvanized iron with side and/or end air cases; cork-filled canvas fenders on some boats. All of these boats were built, over the period 1849 to 1857, by the Francis Metallic Boat Company in New York.
