Neither self-bailing nor self-righting; 25-27ft. overall length, 6-7ft. beam, 2-2.5ft. depth amidships, width of stern 4-4.5ft.; 6 thwarts for a total of 10 oars rowed in double-banked configuration; most boats had no sailing rig; 954lbs. boat/1095lbs. boat plus oars/2145lbs. boat plus crew; clinker built wood hull of cedar planks over oak frames with either copper or galvanized iron fasteners; square sterns; most boat were built without air cases; had slightly flat bottom and no keel; cork filled canvas fenders along both sides. Almost all of these boats were built by private boatyards located in the area around Manasquan and Long Branch over the years 1876 to about 1890.
