Type S/SR Pulling Surfboat

Self-bailing, but not self-righting; 25ft. 6in. overall length, 7ft.3in. beam, 2ft. 9.5in. depth amidships; total weight 2066lbs.; 4 thwarts for 8 oars rowed in double-banked configuration; 18ft. sweep oar for steering; capacity for 9 person crew plus 17 survivors; double-ended clinker built hull of cypress planks over oak frames; self-bailing scuppers located port and starboard amidships along the side of the hull level with the watertight deck; balsa wood buoyancy blocks instead of air cases at ends and along sides under thwarts; cork-filled canvas fenders; a total of 82 Type S surfboats were constructed over the period 1932 to 1935, and a total of 110 Type SR surfboats were constructed over the period 1937 to 1946; all by the Coast Guard’s Curtis Bay Yard.
